2010 Parent and Community Meeting - October 18, 2010, The Living Arts Centre in Mississauga

PLASP’s 2010 Parent and Community Meeting, held at the Living Arts Centre, was a tremendous success.  More than 1,300 parents, community representatives and staff attended the meeting, every seat was filled.  Glen Shipp, President, PLASP Board of Directors, was the Master of Ceremonies. Greeters included Mayor Hazel McCallion, City of Mississauga, Emil Kolb, Chair, Region of Peel, Tony Pontes, Director of Education, Peel District School Board and John Kostoff, Director of Education, Dufferin-Peel District School Board. 

At the community reception held immediately prior to the Parent Meeting, greetings were brought by Janet McDougald, Trustee and Chair, Peel District School Board, Anna Abbruscato, Trustee and Chair, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.  Special Presentations where made to John Huether, Chair, Fair Share Task Force and Chair Success by 6 Peel, Lorna Reid, retired, Director of Children’s Services, Region of Peel and Judith Nyman, former, Director of Education from the Peel District School Board.  Presentations were also made to donors who sponsor PLASP events and retiring board members. 

Glen Shipp presented the President’s Report covering significant highlights from the 2009/2010 year, including growth in services, and the opening of a program in one new location. In 2009/2010 PLASP cared for 8,538 children from 6,956 families in 187 school age locations and 20 early learning and child care centres.  PLASP continued to be recognized by the community, winning the Mississauga News Newspaper and City Parent Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards for 13 years in a row.  The total parent satisfaction level was 99.6% with an 84% response rate.  Sylvia Leal, CEO of PLASP, presented the CEO’s report and Paul Kranjac, Secretary/Treasurer, PLASP Board of Directors, gave the Treasurer's Report. 

Dr. Shankers’ presentation provided guests with information raising children to be self-regulating.   His presentation focused on how a child’s brains works and what parents can do to help growth and development.   Dr. Shanker spoke about a book, Calm Energy by Robert Thayer, during his presentation.  To find out more about this book visit www.calmenergy.com.

Fifty-one donors,sponsored the 2010 Parent and Community Meeting, andwere recognized and thanked for their financial assistance in making the event possible.
