Whether your child is returning to PLASP or attending for the first time, a little preparation can help them feel more comfortable, confident and excited.
The new school year is here and it’s a great time to help your child transition into their PLASP child care program.
Here are six simple tips to help make the transition easier.
1. Visit the School
Help your child get familiar with their new surroundings. Walk or drive by the school together, explore the playground and talk about what they can expect.
A familiar environment can help ease first-day nerves.
2. Talk About PLASP
Have an open conversation about starting or returning to their PLASP program. Encourage your child to ask questions and share how they’re feeling.
If they’re nervous, remind them that it’s completely normal to feel unsure about something new. Sharing one of your own experiences can help them feel less alone.
3. Start a Routine
A consistent routine can help children feel prepared and secure, this includes regular bedtimes and wake-up times.
Practice the morning routine, including getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating breakfast and packing their backpack. If your child attends PLASP before school care, make sure to allow enough time for a relaxed morning.
4. Be Patient
Every child adjusts differently. Give your child time to get comfortable with their new routine and child care program.
Offer plenty of encouragement, listen to their concerns and celebrate small successes. Most importantly, take it one day at a time.
5. Make the Transition Smooth
Introduce them to their PLASP educator and give them a chance to become comfortable in the space.
Building that connection early can help make the transition into before and after school care easier for everyone.
6. Build New Connections
Encourage your child to get to know other children in their PLASP program. Attending PLASP events or connecting with other families can help your child make friends and feel part of the community.
