Terrarium Jars – Get Back to Nature with this Science and Arts Activity!

Terrarium is just a fancy word for a clear, usually glass container, filled with soil, rocks and plants for decoration. In this activity, children are encouraged to use their creativity to create their own terrarium using a clear, clean jar filled with items that they find in nature. Please remember to practice social distancing while collecting these natural elements for your jars.

What You Will Need:

  • Clear Jar
  • Soil
  • Rocks
  • Twigs
  • Leaves
  • Plants or flowers

Process:

  • Clean and dry your jar.
  • Begin layering items into your jar.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight.

Tip: You can start by placing rocks at the bottom of the jar, and then adding a layer of soil and finally the leaves/twigs/moss etc. for a more “traditional” look, however, there is no wrong method! Use your imagination and come up with a unique design!
