Find the Alphabet
A-B-C-D-E-F-G, come and look for the alphabet with me! Today’s activity is around the alphabet and letter recognition. As your young child learns the alphabet, he/she will start to recognize letters in their environment. For example, your child points to a sign and says, “That is B for bunny.” He/She will become increasingly attuned to environmental print and point letters out in books, on signs, on packages, etc. For this activity, your child will play detective and search for letters in the alphabet.
Using sticky notes or sheets of paper, write a letter from the alphabet on each sheet for your child to reference. If your child is in the early stages with letter recognition, just start with a few letters he/she recognizes. Or perhaps your child is mastering the alphabet and letter recognition. Why not challenge him/her with all 26 letters?
Engaging with Your Child:
Start the activity by saying, “I see the letter A here and this is a B.” Point to the letter(s) and draw your child’s attention there. Next, ask your child, “What letters do you see?” Today, we are going to find items in our home that start with the letter A. What do we have that makes an ah-ah-ah sound? Hmm...” Jointly search for items with your child and bring them back to the letter each time. Tip: You might want to keep this game going over the next few days to reinforce letter learning and recognition.
