Creating Characters for Interactive Storytelling
Thinking of ways to make storytelling more engaging? Well, you can by following a few simple steps. Traditional storytelling is great for when you’re putting your child to sleep. The calmness in your voice works as an aid to put your little one to bed, but what about during the day? Rediscover your child's favourite stories through creative expression by creating/constructing characters and props in the book.
-
-Tape
-
-Craft materials (pom poms, construction paper, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, etc.)
-
-Markers, crayons, or paint
The idea of this activity is to create characters and props to retell your child’s favourite story with them.
1.) Start by inviting your child to pick a book of their choice at home. If you have an infant, then take them along your journey and select a book with them “Oo I think we should read Brown Bear today” while pointing at the book that has the brown bear.
1.) Gather materials to create the characters and props used in the book. Remember this is an open- ended activity. Let your child create the characters and props through their own imagination and creativeness. It doesn’t have to look exactly like how it does in the book but just as-long as they can relate them to your storytelling.
2.) Now it’s story-time, place all the characters and props on the floor and begin to read the story out loud. Slow down as you approach a part of the book where you introduce a character “....and now he sees a purple snake looking at him”, giving your child enough time to grab the purple snake and move it around.
