Follow the Leader in an Outdoor Adventure
Let’s get dressed for the weather and play a new version of “Follow the Leader”. This activity will have your child navigating through new areas of nature and get their body’s active and moving!
Encourage your child to be the leader in navigating through this new outdoor area. This simple game has no right or wrong way to play, ask your child “It is your turn to be the leader, and we will follow what you do”. Follow your child’s lead, encourage them to take you over, under, around or underneath obstacles that may come up. You can sing a simple song “We’re following the leader, the leader, the leader …. We’re following the leader where ever they may go.”
Find moments to enrich their vocabulary by asking them what they see and naming the many nature items around you such as shrub, tree, leaf, rocks, river, log, sand, flowers, grass, etc. This outdoor adventure is meant to focus your child on using their fundamental movement skills to navigate through their adventure. The fundamental movement skills to practice during this adventure is balancing, rolling, crawling, jumping, running, and hopping. You can take turns to be the leader and have fun observing the many different elements of nature you come across. Encourage your child to stop, observe and appreciate what captivates their attention. Have fun and enjoy your adventure!
