Storytelling Bag
Children are great storytellers! Have you ever seen the joy on a child’s face when they’re making up a story on the spot? Today’s activity is all about creating stories by collecting items in a bag as story prompts. Let’s get creative and encourage children to use their imagination and tell new or old stories.
-
Explain to your child what you will do in this activity.
-
Go on a hunt to gather toys/objects.
-
Sit in a comfortable space.
-
Pick out a toy from the bag with your eyes closed.
-
Use your imagination to make up a story about the item you picked.
-
Take turns telling stories.
Invite your child by saying “We will take turns to tell a story, I would love to hear your story first. Close your eyes, and pick something out of the bag”. Listen to your child’s story fully, do not interrupt their turn. Once they’re done, ask them open-ended questions such as “What was your favourite part of your story? Why?”. Take your turn to tell a story and ask your child what they liked the most about your story. This will reinforce their understanding skills.
Telling stories has so many benefits for a child. This activity supports a child’s self-expression while strengthening the way they use language, the way they communicate, the way they relate to the world around them and how well they can listen to others. Your child will retell stories that they understand and that have significance to them. Show them your best listening skills and have fun with your imagination.
Tip: If your child is older, take turns to continue each other's story every time you pull out a new object as a prompt. Each object will signify a new element into the story you are creating together.
