Creating Bug Shelters using Natural Materials
Use this next activity as a way to get children to connect with nature, investigate the world of bugs and learn about how to support a balanced ecosystem. This activity is also a great way to help encourage biodiversity as it is a natural way to control pests in our gardens without the use of harsh chemicals.

During your outdoor time, take some time to look for little bugs on your walk. This will help your child to make a connection to this activity. Invite your child by saying “Would you like to make a small home for these little insects?”. In a bag, ask your child to collect nature items such as leaves, twigs, rocks, wood chips, pieces of bark, pinecones, etc. Once you are back home, ask your child to choose a structure to place all items they have collected. Explain to your child the benefits of creating such a home for the environment. “Bugs help our environment, we will give the beetles, ladybugs, bees, worms and spiders a home to stay in whenever they need.”. Find a space to place your insect shelter and revisit it with your child. This would be a great time to have your child use their observation skills to connect with nature.
